What every edition includes

Bitwig sells three editions, which it calls flavors: Essentials, Producer and the full Bitwig Studio. The device counts in the June 2023 launch post (40, 92 and 154) are out of date; this page uses Bitwig's shop as read on 19 October 2026.

On the shop, all three editions list the same base:

  • macOS, Windows and Linux.
  • Unlimited audio, instrument and hybrid tracks and scenes.
  • Unlimited VST and CLAP plug-ins.
  • A sampler with slicing and hardware emulation.
  • Native hardware integration with MIDI/CV compatibility, full MPE support and multitouch integration.
  • A perpetual license with a 12-month Upgrade Plan: new versions released in the first 12 months are free, and the license keeps working after the plan ends.

Projects also move between editions. Bitwig's announcement says a project can be shared across editions: if it uses an instrument or effect your edition does not have, that device opens in player mode, where you can still adjust selected parameters. A collaborator on Essentials can open your Studio project, but cannot fully edit the Studio-only devices in it.

Which edition fits you

Essentials fits you if you are learning to produce, record a few sources at a time, or build tracks mostly with third-party plug-ins. Tracks and plug-ins are unlimited, so the limits are elsewhere: 10 modulators, 3 stretching algorithms, one screen, 4/8 audio i/o busses, and plug-in side-chain without the multi-out options. If you use a drum plug-in with separate outputs, or an audio interface with many inputs, check those two lines before you buy.

Producer is the edition for most people who make music regularly. Over Essentials it adds 54 devices (105 in total), 18 modulators, multi-out plug-in routing, layered editing, audio comping in the arranger and the Clip Launcher, Slice to Drum Machine or Sampler, 8 stretching algorithms including zplane's Elastique, up to 3 screens, unlimited audio i/o busses and several projects open at once. It does not have The Grid, the Spectral Suite or the full library.

Bitwig Studio, the full edition, is for sound design and modular work. The Grid, Bitwig's modular environment for building instruments, audio effects and note effects, is only in this edition, as are the 43-modulator system, the sampler's 5 play modes and full multisample editor, devices such as Phase-4, Convolution, EQ+ and the Spectral Suite, and the full sound library. Pick it if you want to build your own instruments, or if you exchange projects with people who rely on those devices.

Not sure? Start lower. Bitwig's support page says upgrades are offered between all editions, one or more steps at a time, and that upgrading this way “will not cost more than buying a Bitwig Studio license in the first place”. Downgrades are not available, so buying the full edition and stepping down later is not an option.

Try it free before you choose

Bitwig's own tools answer most of the question before you spend anything.

  1. Run the 30-day trial. Bitwig's trial is the full version of Bitwig Studio, free for 30 days without limitations. It needs a Bitwig user account and an internet connection, and it is available once per user account and per computer (Bitwig Studio Trial).
  2. Note which devices you reach for. The trial includes every device of the full edition. If your projects end up depending on The Grid, the Spectral Suite or Phase-4, a lower edition would open them in player mode, so you need the full edition. If you mostly use third-party plug-ins, Essentials or Producer will do.
  3. Keep your trial projects. When the trial ends, Bitwig Studio runs in demo mode: you can still open your projects, but saving and exporting are disabled until you activate a license.
  4. Already own an edition? Check your upgrade offers. Bitwig says the upgrade offers that apply to you appear in your Bitwig user profile. Upgrading what you own costs less than buying the higher edition new.

Buy Bitwig Studio with crypto through Unboxkey

If Bitwig's webshop declines your card, or you would rather pay in crypto, we can buy the license for you. You pay us in crypto, and we buy a new license in Bitwig's webshop with the gift option ticked. Bitwig's support page explains that a gift purchase is not registered to the buyer's account automatically and that the license information is sent by email to the person receiving it. You get that email and register the license in your own Bitwig account; the license includes the 12-month Upgrade Plan. The steps are on our How it works page, and the coins and networks we accept are on How to pay.

We sell new full licenses of all three editions. We do not sell upgrades between editions, or EDU, crossgrade and NFR licenses.

FAQ

Can Bitwig Studio Essentials open a project made in the full Bitwig Studio?

Yes. Bitwig's announcement of the three editions says projects can be shared across them. Instruments and effects that your edition does not include open in player mode, where only selected parameters can be adjusted.

Can I upgrade from Essentials to Producer or Studio later?

Yes. Bitwig offers upgrades between all editions, one or more steps at a time, and says that upgrading this way will not cost more than buying the full Bitwig Studio license in the first place. The offers that apply to you appear in your Bitwig user profile. Downgrades are not available.

What happens when the 12-month Upgrade Plan ends?

The license keeps working. Bitwig says the Upgrade Plan is not a subscription: you keep the latest version you received and its bug-fix updates, and newer versions become available when you renew. You can renew at any time, and renewing early extends the expiry date by 12 months.

Does Essentials limit the number of tracks or plug-ins?

No. Bitwig's shop lists unlimited audio, instrument and hybrid tracks and scenes and unlimited VST and CLAP plug-ins for all three editions. The differences are in the devices, modulators, editing tools, routing and sound library.

Do all three editions run on Linux?

Yes. Bitwig's shop lists macOS, Windows and Linux for Essentials, Producer and the full Bitwig Studio.
