Why you can't pay most developers in crypto
Professional software is usually sold from the developer's own web shop, which takes only what its payment processor supports. Ableton's help centre lists credit cards, Mastercard debit cards, PayPal, Google Pay, AliPay and WeChat for China, a few European bank transfer methods, wire transfer for EU residents, and Klarna or Splitit instalments. Cryptocurrency is not on the list.
Image-Line, the maker of FL Studio, hands card payments to third-party partners "(e.g. PayPal, Stripe)" and says that when a card is declined, "we have no idea or information on why the transaction was declined." Native Instruments writes that if Stripe refuses a payment, "there is nothing we can do manually in order to validate your payment." For these developers, support cannot approve a declined payment by hand. The decision sits with the payment processor and your bank.
Crypto payment directories show the same gap. CoinGate's category for software and web services is mostly hosting, servers and online services, and none of the developers named here appears on its first page.
Ways to buy software with crypto on your own
You can try three routes without any service in between. Each has a catch.
- Pay with a crypto-funded card. An exchange or card issuer converts your USDT, BTC or ETH and pays the shop with a regular Visa or Mastercard card number. The shop sees an ordinary card payment, so every card check still applies. Ableton accepts debit cards only on Mastercard. Native Instruments asks for a billing address that matches the card, 3-D Secure and no proxy services. JetBrains says a card without 3D Secure may be blocked before the bank even sees the charge. A crypto card can be declined for the same reasons as a bank card; check its top-up and conversion fees too.
- Use a gift card, if the store sells them. A gift card helps only when the software is sold through a store that issues them. Bitrefill, for example, sells Microsoft Store gift cards for Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDT, USDC and other coins, but its US card is redeemable only on Microsoft accounts set to the USA, and Microsoft 365 cannot be bought with the balance. A developer with its own web shop, such as Ableton, takes only the methods on its own list.
- Ask someone you trust to order for you. Image-Line itself suggests that you "ask your friends/family to order this for you" and pay them back, which you can do in crypto. Make sure the license is registered to you from the start: Image-Line does not allow license transfers between customers.
If the real problem is a declined card, try the developer's free options first: PayPal, a card with international payments enabled, or, for JetBrains, an authorized reseller in your country (JetBrains notes that personal subscriptions through resellers aren't available in the United States). Our guides to paying for software with USDT and to an FL Studio card decline list those steps.
Genuine licenses vs grey keys
Search for a cheap license paid in crypto and you will find marketplace listings and "lifetime license" sites. Image-Line's warning about FL Studio is a good test for any product: an official copy comes from image-line.com or a licensed distributor, and buying on G2A, eBay, Craigslist or other auction sites means "you risk buying software that is illegal, pirated, already registered or non-functional." It adds that "selling, purchasing, gifting or receiving FL Studio as second hand is forbidden".
Image-Line lists the risks of an unofficial seller: a license that doesn't work, losing access to your account at any moment, and no customer support, forum access or lifetime free updates. Before you pay any seller in crypto, get clear answers to three questions:
- Where does the license come from? It should be the developer's own store or a dealer on the developer's own dealer or distributor list.
- Whose account will it be in? Yours: a new serial, key or code, or an official transfer.
- What if the seller can't deliver? A crypto transfer has no card chargeback, so the seller's written refund terms are your only protection.
Buy it with crypto through Unboxkey
Unboxkey is an independent service: you pay us in crypto, we buy the license from the developer's store or an authorized dealer and email it to you as a key or code, an official transfer to your account, or a subscription on your account, whichever the developer allows. How it works has the details. In short:
- Pick the product and edition in the software catalog. The price shown is one total, our fee included.
- At checkout, enter your email and pay in USDT, USDC, BTC, ETH or another coin listed on How to pay. The page shows the address, the exact amount and a QR code.
- Once the payment is confirmed on the blockchain, we buy the license.
- We email it to you, typically within 2 hours of payment confirmation (09:00–21:00 UTC), at most 24 hours.
Some products come with conditions set by the developer. FL Studio is bought new on an Image-Line account created in your name, because Image-Line does not allow transfers of registered licenses: you give your name at checkout, then we change the account email to yours and you set your own password. The Adobe redemption codes we buy from US retailers redeem only on an Adobe account registered in the United States. JetBrains subscriptions are ordered from an authorized JetBrains reseller in your name, and personal editions aren't available to customers in the United States. A few examples:
| Product and edition | What you receive | Total, fee included |
|---|---|---|
| DaVinci Resolve Studio, perpetual | Activation key by email | $309.75 |
| FL Studio Producer Edition | Bought on a new Image-Line account in your name; we change its email to yours | $187.95 |
| Ableton Live 12 Suite | Official license transfer, or a new dealer serial | $786.45 |
| Komplete 26 Standard | New dealer serial for Native Access | $576.45 |
| Cubase Pro 15 | Download Access Code | $608.99 |
| Bitwig Studio | License sent through Bitwig's gift option | $418.95 |
| Adobe Creative Cloud Pro, 12 months | Redemption code for a US-registered Adobe account | $818.88 |
DaVinci Resolve Studio is the simplest case: an activation key you enter after downloading the software from Blackmagic Design. See buying DaVinci Resolve Studio with crypto for the full walk-through.

FAQ
Can I pay Ableton, Image-Line or Native Instruments directly in crypto?
Ableton's list of accepted payment methods has no cryptocurrency. Image-Line and Native Instruments describe card payments through processors such as Stripe and PayPal, and their payment help articles mention no crypto option. To pay in crypto you need a crypto-funded card, a gift card where one exists, or a buying service.
Will a crypto card stop my software payment from being declined?
Not reliably. The shop sees an ordinary card payment, so the same checks apply: card type, billing address, 3-D Secure and permission for international payments. Ableton, for example, accepts debit cards only on Mastercard.
How do I know a license bought with crypto is genuine?
Ask where it comes from and whose account it will be in. A genuine license is bought from the developer or an authorized dealer and registers to your own account. Image-Line warns that copies from G2A, eBay, Craigslist or other auction sites may be illegal, pirated, already registered or non-functional.
Which coins does Unboxkey accept?
USDT on Tron (TRC-20), Ethereum (ERC-20), BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20), Solana, TON and Polygon; USDC on Ethereum, Solana and Base; ETH on Ethereum, Arbitrum One and Base; and BTC, SOL, TON, LTC, BNB and TRX on their own networks.
What if Unboxkey can't buy my license?
If we can't buy your license, we refund the full amount you paid, in the same coin, with no deductions. Once a working license has been delivered, the developer's own refund policy applies.
